On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie, Lori, and Chris welcome Dr. Travis Stork.

In 2016, Dr. Travis Stork, ER physician and host of the Emmy Award-winning show The Doctors, joined a nationwide movement – For Your SweetHeart™: Where Diabetes and Heart Disease Meet – to raise awareness of the link between type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The initiative seeks to encourage those with type 2 diabetes to know their risk and speak to their healthcare provider, for the sake of their health and the people they cherish the most.

Dr. Stork partnered with For Your SweetHeart, in remembrance of his grandfather, who had type 2 diabetes, to urge people with type 2 diabetes to take the Heart You Quiz, and sign-up for more information to learn more about their risk for heart disease. Because of his grandfather’s experience, Dr. Stork learned about the importance of managing the condition, before he ever became a doctor. As a grandchild of someone who was directly impacted by type 2 diabetes, Dr. Stork shares his personal connection to type 2 diabetes – his grandfather’s story – and why this campaign is close to his heart.

This Grandparents Day (September 10), we encourage you to help educate your family members and loved ones about the critical link between type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to a national survey, more than half (52 percent) of adults with type 2 diabetes are unaware of their increased risk for heart disease and related life-threatening events, such as heart attack, stroke or even death.
