Dealing with Diabetes Burnout: How to Recharge and Get Back on Track When You Feel Frustrated and Overwhelmed Living with Diabetes (Ginger Vieira) is an inspiring and empowering guide to managing the daily work and pressure of diabetes management - counting carbohydrates at every meal, constantly adjusting medication doses, taking daily injections, pricking fingers multiple times a day, and struggling with the unavoidable challenges of fancy, yet imperfect, technology - that can lead to burnout. Vieira provides the tools and encouragement needed to help readers get back on track and make diabetes management a rewarding priority. Chapters directly address burnout in relation to: food, exercise, insulin dosing, blood sugar checking, fear of low blood sugar, being a caregiver/spouse of a person with diabetes, communicating more effectively with your doctor, taking a healthy "vacation" from diabetes, and creating realistic expectations and goals.

Breanna, Taylor, Alycia, and Brian
On todays show we have studio full of fun. Breanna, age 9, her twin sister Taylor and their wonderful blended family. Breanna was diagnosed last august with Type one diabetes.
Listen as Breanna and her family share the emotional roller-coaster they have been on for the last 9 months. In spite of these challenges, this family manages to keep a great since of humor and positive, up-beat attitude as they smile their way through the incredible learning curve that is Type one Diabetes.
In most ways, this is a tragically common Diabetes story. However, this story has a unique twist. Brian, Moms significant other, found himself in the middle of learning how to help care for a newly diagnosed Type one child.
While learning how to test Breanna's blood sugar, each family member practiced on themselves. Thats when Brian discovered he had very high glucose levels. It was assumed that he had Type 2 Diabetes, so the Doc sent him home with a testing kit. He monitored BG levels for a few months and his sugar numbers continued to rise.
Just two weeks ago it was determined that Brian is actually a Type one Diabetic. Imagin that... 2 Type one Diabetics, in a blended family, Diagnosed only months apart with no genetic connection.
Listen to their intriguing family story...

Kendall Simmons is a former NFL player who played nearly ten years after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 30th overall pick in 2002. Following his first season, Simmons was selected as the team’s rookie of the year.
Shortly before his second season began in 2003, Simmons was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and was not sure if he would be able to continue his football career. With the help of team doctors and a strong support network, Simmons returned to the field that same year.
As he learned to manage his diabetes, he regained his strength and flourished on the football field. In 2005, he started all 16 regular season games and all four playoff games with the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning Super Bowl XL over the Seattle Seahawks.
Today, he has partnered with Novo Nordisk, a global health care company dedicated to diabetes care, to raise awareness of the importance of properly managing blood glucose levels, and to demonstrate that diabetes can be successfully integrated into your life and ambitions. Kendall is currently working with Novo Nordisk to recognize people with diabetes who give back to their communities.
Now retired from the NFL, Simmons is still very active in the diabetes community. He has spoken to children and adults with diabetes across the country, to let them know that the disease can be managed. Simmons hopes that his story can be an inspiration to children and others with diabetes.
Over the course of his career, Simmons spent most of his time on the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing seven NFL seasons with the team and spanning 80 regular season and seven post-season games. He also played on the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills.
